Dr. Richy Charls

Orthopedic Surgeon & Sports Medicine Specialist

Dr. Richy Charls is a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeon specializing in advanced arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee. He practices with Paris Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Paris, Texas, where he provides modern, patient-centered, and compassionate care for athletes and active individuals across Northeast Texas.

Training & Clinical Focus

Dr. Charls completed his fellowship at Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio. This institution is one of the nation’s premier fellowship programs and home to the team physicians for the Cincinnati Reds. During fellowship, he trained extensively in complex shoulder and knee reconstruction including ACL and multi-ligamentous knee surgery, shoulder instability repair, and 3D planned patient specific shoulder replacement. In addition, Dr. Charls had the privilege of providing both training room and on-field coverage for Major League Baseball, NCAA Division III, and high school athletics.

He completed his orthopedic residency at The University of Toledo Medical Center where he received a well-rounded experience across orthopedic trauma, joint replacement, pediatrics, and hand/upper extremity surgery.

Clinical Practice

Dr. Charls’ clinical practice focuses on the treatment of traumatic injuries, chronic degenerative conditions, and acute shoulder, hip, and knee pathology. He strongly believes that most orthopedic conditions can be successfully managed through high quality nonoperative care. However, when surgery becomes the best remaining option, his emphasis on minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques, biologic augmentation, evidence-based decision making, and modern rehabilitation principles ensures optimal recovery and long-term function.

In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Charls is deeply involved in local sports medicine outreach. He serves as the team physician for two area high schools in the Paris region, working closely with athletic trainers, physical therapists, and primary care physicians to deliver comprehensive musculoskeletal care throughout the community.

Education & Philosophy of Care

Dr. Charls earned his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX where he graduated with honors and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society for academic excellence and leadership.

His care philosophy centers on patient empowerment, communication, and partnership. He believes every patient, whether a competitive athlete or an active grandparent, deserves the same thoughtful attention and surgical precision to achieve their best outcome. Dr. Charls believes an empowered and well-informed patient is best able to make the right decision for their own healthcare.

Research & Academic Interests

Dr. Charls has published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles. His ongoing interests include surgical efficiency, outcome optimization, and leveraging digital tools for patient education and engagement.
